PGRTAZ is soliciting current member articles relating to the planned giving industry and membership news for inclusion in their fourth quarter electronic newsletter.

This is your chance to share your knowledge, expertise and personal highlights with your fellow PGRTAZ members.

Article should be:

Related to educating fellow members on planned giving/current happenings
- Advocacy news and/or legislation is highly welcome/sought.
Documents should be no more than 500 words in a word document and may include a small graphic or author’s photo (Submit article and graphic as separate attachments-graphic must be in a .jpeg format, 1 MB max)

Articles should avoid:

Content of a marketing nature
Controversial or argumentative articles
Unsubstantiated or inflated claims
Videos are welcome adhering to guidelines as reflected

All articles are gratefully received, but owing to space and editorial consideration, not all will be published in the newsletter. The committee’s estimate of 1-2 articles will be selected.

Deadline for submission is September 30, 2020.

CGP Launches Conference Diversity Scholarships

CGP is proud to announce a new initiative to support our members who represent diverse communities through a scholarship program to attend the 2020 CGP Virtual Conference. The scholarship includes registration to attend the full conference and a one-year national membership. Members and council member prospects representing Black, LatinX, Asian/Pacific Islander, Indigenous, two or more races, LGBTQI, and differently abled communities are invited to participate.

“The CGP Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force has developed several recommendations to improve our efforts to recruit, support and advance members from diverse communities. This initiative capitalizes on the unique circumstances of the 2020 CGP Conference to invite members of these communities to increase their skills and build their professional network.” – Marion Yongue, CGP Board of Directors and Chair, CGP Task Force on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

CGP Conference Goes Virtual

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the CGP Board of Directors unanimously voted to present the 2020 CGP Conference entirely online. The safety of our members must be our top priority. With the continuing widespread presence of the virus, the board determined there was no certainty CGP could safely host an in-person large-scale event in October.

Plans are already underway to present a premier online conference using industry-leading technology and the very latest best practices in successful online meetings. CGP will continue to focus on presenting the highest quality professional development sessions, creating opportunities for networking, and connecting attendees with our exhibitors and sponsors to learn about the latest products and services in our field.

The conference dates of October 7-9 remain the same, though the daily schedule will change. Additional information regarding schedules and fees will be published over the next few weeks. If you have a fiscal year ending June 30 and are interested in registering under your current year budget, please contact Carey Wilson at cwilson@charitablegiftplanners.org. Carey can provide invoices and process registrations as needed.

Conference Chair Meryl Cosentino, the 2020 Conference Committee, CGP Board of Directors and CGP staff all look forward to presenting a fantastic conference that safely brings our community together to share knowledge, visit with colleagues and make new acquaintances. We hope to see you in October.

The Arizona Community Foundation's Black Philanthropy Initiative and the Center for LGBTQ Philanthropy, along with 11 other community collaborators invite you to an evening of entertainment and impactful information. HIV, one of the greatest healthcare issues impacting Arizona's black community, takes center stage at the Because We Care Community Forum and Resource Fair. Join us in spreading this urgent call to action Because We Care.

During the Community Forum, a host of advocates including Mayor Greg Stanton, faith-based leaders, survivors, artists, and medical experts will deliver messages of hope, provide information about testing and linkage to care, and mobilize the community into action. Onsite mobile testing will be offered at the Resource Fair, along with other information and services.

Developed by the Greater Arizona Chapter, this incredible year-long program has been adopted as a model by AFP International. In addition to matching you with an experienced certified (CFRE) professional mentor, the program features educational presentations twice each month, covering all aspects of fundraising knowledge and skills to make yours a successful career. Designed especially for professionals new to the field of fundraising (1-5 years of experience) this program helps you move beyond the basics to learn in detail about:

The Case for Support, Annual and Monthly Giving, Special Events, Major Gifts, Planned Giving, Volunteer Management, Donor Stewardship, Membership Programs, Capital Campaigns, Making the Ask, Prospect Management and Research, Database Administration, Career Development and more…

Kay Sprinkel Grace understands the challenges of 21st century philanthropy as well as its opportunities, and brings her experience from working with countless nonprofit organizations to bear on the current issues affecting donor development, fund raising, outreach, message strategy and volunteerism.

As principal of her own organization since 1989, her clients include public media, hospitals, universities, arts and cultural organizations, environment and social justice organizations, churches and education, as well as community-based services. Demystifying Planned Giving

This presentation is for anyone who has ever left a planned giving seminar confused by the alphabet soup of NIM CRUTs, CRATS, GIFs etc. Come prepared to learn the 3 most common planned gift types, and understand why you don’t have to be a lawyer, CPA or financial planner to initiate conversation about estate gifts with your donors. You will also learn what your organization needs in order to successfully implement a new planned giving program, or to increase awareness of an existing effort.

Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are becoming more commonplace as many donors’ preferred method for supporting charitable causes. Nonprofit professionals sometimes struggle to find answers to several questions: How should these gifts be acknowledged? Can donor benefits be awarded to the individual(s) who started the DAF? Just how do DAFs work, and how do I talk with my organization’s donors about them? In this session, we will address the answers to these questions and more, with a goal of becoming more comfortable talking with donors about DAFs, and ensuring that our nonprofits and our donors stay clear of possible IRS problems!

Larry Hostetler

Larry Hostetler has been the Chapter Services Director for the Association of Fundraising Professionals since 2011. His territory includes the western U.S., Pennsylvania, and North and South Carolina, which means he provides services and visits 66 chapters in six time zones.

His service to AFP has also been varied. He has served on Chapter Boards in medium, large, and small chapters (in that order) and was Chapter President of the award-winning Yosemite Chapter in California from 2008-2010. He has also served on AFP International committees, most recently chairing the Chapter Support Subcommittee in the Membership Division.

Speak up now to prevent the added burden and security concerns of collecting donor Social Security Numbers for the IRS.

Submit your comments to the IRS by December 16.

The IRS is proposing a rule that would encourage nonprofits to ask donors for their Social Security Numbers and then submit them to the IRS along with donors' names, addresses, and donation amounts. Yet, on its website the IRS advises taxpayers to only give out their Social Security Number when "absolutely necessary." Most nonprofits believe that "never" is a better answer; as in a charitable nonprofit should never be asking donors for a Social Security Number when soliciting donations.

The proposed regulations would give nonprofits the option to file a separate new information return with the IRS every year and then send a copy of each filing to each individual donor, for contributions of more than $250 in value. A similar mandatory proposal was considered and rejected in the past based on the numerous legal, policy, and confidentiality problems it raised. While this proposal is for an optional reporting process now, it could theoretically open the door to mandatory reporting in the future.

This is still in the proposal stage, but the comment period ends on December 16, 2015, so don't delay and miss your chance to be heard!

Paul Eisenstein is the Social Enterprise Practice Leader for Y Scouts. Paul joined Y Scouts in 2012 and works with nonprofits and social enterprises to identify and hire leaders who not only have deep functional expertise but are aligned with an organization’s unique purpose, values, and culture and possess the characteristics of truly Exceptional Leaders. Paul gains satisfaction from knowing that the leaders he places directly help those who struggle become strong.

From 2008 to 2012, Paul served as the V.P. of Operations at The Mission Continues, a nationally-focused nonprofit dedicated to empowering returning military veterans in continued service. She completed her Masters in International Business from Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix, AZ in 2000. Stacey spends her free time traveling around the world and spent several years living in Europe while mastering her Spanish. She has served on Boards of local children’s organizations in Phoenix and is a current Board Director for the W.P. Carey Center for Entrepreneurship at ASU.

PGRTAZ Corporate Membership Policy

PGRTAZ offers a “Corporate Membership” (herein referred to as Membership) which is owned by an organization upon membership application processing, and remittance of membership fee.

The Membership will be an annual membership effective from the time the membership application is processed.

Annual membership dues will be the same as the regular membership dues at time of application, allowing for the option for base membership dues or base membership dues with pre-paid meetings dues.

The Membership permits the member organization to send one representative to each PGRTAZ event at the regular membership registration fee price point. Only one representative from the member organization may attend any given event under the Membership.

The Membership cannot be transferred from one organization to another.

This policy is approved and accepted by the PGRTAZ Board of Directors on 09/25/2015.

This one-day seminar will help you explore the strategies for a successful planned giving and endowment program and move your organization forward in the process. During this advanced session, participants will:

Begin the journey toward financial stability

Offered by the Arizona Endowment Building Institute, Planned Giving 101 is a one-day course that focuses on creating the basic infrastructure necessary for nonprofit organizations to begin a legacy giving program.

During Planned Giving 101, attendees will:

	Learn the importance of gift acceptance, investment, spending, and windfall gift policies.
	Gain a baseline understanding of the variety of planned gift instruments such as bequests, trusts and charitable gift annuities.
	Learn to identify potential planned gift prospects among their organization's donors and volunteers.
	Assess their organizations' readiness to develop and launch a planned giving program and determine how to effectively "sell" the idea to the board of directors.

Attendance is free for organizations with an endowment or reserve fund at ACF and $25 per person otherwise.

Learn how the Arizona Endowment Building Institute can benefit your nonprofit organization during a session led by Ed Knight, manager of ACF's Center for Planned Giving. Before a nonprofit can participate in an AEBI training program, a representative of the organization must attend one of the AEBI Information Sessions scheduled over the next few months. Jay orchestrated the sale of eTapestry to Blackbaud in 2007 after growing the company to more than 10,000 non-profit clients and charting seven years of record growth. Before starting eTapestry, Jay served 14 years as President and CEO of Master Software Corporation. MSC provided a widely used family of database products for the non-profit sector called Fund-Master. Jay has also been a business consultant for numerous high tech firms throughout the U.S. He is a graduate of Butler University with a B.S. in Business Administration. He currently serves on the boards of numerousnon-profits and one private tech company.

This session explores the Fundraising Effectiveness Project report commissioned by AFP and the Urban Institute. We will focus on what can be done about retaining donors based on the principles of Dr. Adrian Sargeant, the world renowned authority on building donor retention and donor loyalty. Dr. Sargeant's principles are based upon years of research conducted in the sector and can be used by any organization whether you are a one person shop or a large department. Over the next twenty years, 1.3 million “Baby Boomers” in Maricopa County will be over sixty. This has significant impact on the way nonprofit organizations recruit, train, retain and communicate with their paid and unpaid workforce. To get the most from Boomers, you need to rethink who they are and how to engage them… then will they increase their financial giving!

Urge Congress to Permanently Extend Key Charitable Giving Incentives

Congressional issues is moving fast - you need to take action today - use social media if you can to get urgent word to your members of Congress.

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a short-term tax bill that essentially renews three incentives for charitable giving for only three weeks. The Senate is expected to approve the bill this week. That's not good enough for the people and communities that nonprofits are able to serve through donations of money from IRA rollovers, and through donations of food to food banks and land for conservation purposes. In October, the Chronicle of Philanthropy published its analysis of charitable giving across America, county by county, metro city by city, and with comparison analysis to 2006. Arizona and metro Phoenix both ranked in the middle of the pack, which was surprising to many. Equally as surprising was the finding that during the Recession higher income Americans reduced the share of their income going to charitable contributions, while the rest of the population increased its share. What do these data mean? Are Americans becoming more charitable, or less? Should all Americans be giving more? And if they did, what would that mean for our communities?

The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy is pleased to open up the application process for the scholarship fund for members of diverse communities to attend the AFP International Conference on Fundraising.

This fund is broken out into three categories:

• African American

• Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender (GLBT)

• General Diversity Fund

As each AFP Diverse Community reaches 100 members, a separate category will be added.

During AFP’s Diversity Scholarship Campaign, which ended on August 31, 2014, AFP raised funding for fifteen (15) diversity scholarships for the 2015 Conference, as follows: Ten (10) General Diversity Scholarships (available to fundraising professionals from any currently identified AFP diverse community; African America, Asian, Faith-based, GLBT, Hispanic, Jewish, or Rural), Two (2) African American Scholarship and Three (3) GLBT Scholarships.

This means that AFP is able to offer $1,500 scholarships ($595 conference fee + $905 for travel expenses) for each of the currently identified AFP diverse communities. THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the diversity scholarship campaign, for your generosity and for helping to ensure a successful launch of this new program.

AFP is now accepting applications for these diversity scholarships. Below is a link to the AFP Diversity Scholarship Application form, which resides in the Diversity section at www.afpnet.org.

PGRTAZ and the Summer Forum Committee is proud to bring Dr. Susan Raymond back to the Arizona community. PGRTAZ has a reputation for bringing innovative, unusual, thought provoking and practical/useful presenters to our stage. While we were searching for this years' answer to those objectives, Dr. Raymond's name topped the charts.

Dr. Raymond will be working hard for us on event day, including her closing plenary session, and three breakout sessions. Attendees new to planned giving will benefit from her hands on morning session, illustrating how changing demographics are rapidly altering the situations we may face on any given day in the workplace.

Leadership track professionals: strap yourselves in for a quite a ride in the afternoon as Dr. Raymond first gives you a glimpse of what the near, and not so near, future looks like for philanthropy, and then shows how to face and overcome the significant differences between current organizational leaders and the emerging group of new leaders...different in education, approach, communication, and motivation.

The official planning activity for the 2013 Summer Forum (June 12, 2013 at the Phoenix Country Club) is underway..The date has been set, the venue contracted, the board event objectives approved, and the draft budget is in motion. Several of last years' sponsors have already renewed, and sponsorship outreach is also in full motion already.

Next, we move to the details, including setting this years' specific theme/wording (the general theme is excellence in stewardship and measuring impact for donor value), the call for programs and speakers, vetting/contracting speakers, the event look and feel, the save the date cards, marketing collaborators outreach, end of day giveaways, and recruiting and training event day volunteers.

The 18^th Annual Summer Forum will be held on June 13^th, 2012, in Phoenix Arizona, at the Phoenix Country Club.

The three educational tracks include a series for newer planners or those interested in understanding the basics of gifting and taxation, a series for board members and donors who want to explore innovative ways to maximize their impact, and a series for seasoned planners wanting to stretch their knowledge or tackle specific issues.
